We're more than excited to be sending out a batch of awesome mittens tomorrow to the Gift Shop at Toronto's Design Exchange!

The Design Exchange offers a collection of contemporary objects created by designers from all over Canada. Our selection varies monthly, so please check back often for new items. The shop is located in the lobby of the DX and all proceeds support our non-profit cause and our featured designers.

This past spring we had the pleasure of participating in the Movies & Maker's Spring show at theatre in Toronto's Beaches. We met the lovely and talented Avril Loreti there, and we love her modern home decor!

Our absolute favourite Canadian Textile Designer is Virginia Johnson! We went to a sample sale at her studio this past summer, and almost couldn't take it. So many beautiful prints!! I walked away with some fabric which I have earmarked as "new spring pillow cases". Also a lovely piece that is going to work as a summer shawl! You can pick up her oh so lovely shawls at the DX shop, oh and our mittens too!

My #1 Pick: One of a Kind Spring Show

It was so lovely to have met Emanuelle Dion of foutu tissu from Montreal. She and design partner Isabelle Bergeron make the most stylish home decor pieces! As is very important to me, they are stylish and sustainable; using repurposed vintage furniture pieces & dead stock fabric pieces which they hand screen-print. We love! The Mr. and I spent a few mins talking to Emanuelle and loving each piece in the booth, I had my eye on a wicked screen-printed cushion, and we both said at the same time "oh this one is awesome". We had fallen for the same cushion (different colour-ways) we compromised. It goes so well with our vintage teal couch!

Comme il est très important pour moi, ils sont élégants et durables, utilisant des pièces de mobilier vintage repurposed et mort des morceaux de tissu d'actions dont ils la main sérigraphie. Nous aimons! Le M. et j'ai passé un peu de minutes de parler à Emanuelle et aimer chaque morceau dans la cabine, j'ai eu mon oeil sur un écran à coussin méchants imprimés, et nous dit tous les deux en même temps "oh celui-ci est génial". Nous avions craqué pour le même coussin (couleur différente manières) nous compromise. Il va si bien avec notre canapé bleu sarcelle vintage!

Spring has arrived!!

I have finally almost dug myself out from under a huge pile of sweaters (I am working on more mittens and some new goodies for FW 2011/2012), to make some fun new items for Edit SS 2011!

I love (and hoard) vintage fabrics. Some more purses coming soon! I also seem to be a collector of little mini zip-up wallets/pouches. They are really awesome to divide stuff if you carry a large purse, like I often do! They can be used for makeup, electronics, receipts, hmmm what else??

Color Blocking Love

Every single fashion magazine that I have picked up lately, has a bright colour blocked outfit on the cover! I am espcially in love with the SS 2011 RTW Collection from GUCCI!

I love this. As a confessed black-o-holic. I am known to not practice what I preach. I often would encourage my clients to add pops of color to their wardrobes; yet I, am in a daily uniform of black (and often purple, which is kind of like the new black for me).

I love the idea of color blocking. Often I hear people intimidated, "each piece of the outfit has to be a different color"?

My suggestion is to just do it, and I will too start to practice what I preach! I have a killer color blocked outfit planned for Toronto Fashion Week (stay tuned) .A rule to make it easy, is simply to remember to keep all the colors in the same "tone". That way they all complement each other, while still being all different.

A way to ease into it. Black Skirt or dress, colour block with the shoes and belt and purse.

As always, I keep looking for eco-conscious ways to interpret relevant fashion. So for those who can't afford the $795 for Gucci (and that's only for the gold tassel belt!) My I suggest some vintage finds that uniquely achieve Color Blocking:

So I think THAT I REALLY WANT a Sprout Watch!

I remember back in the day (before I had a cell phone), always having a very funky Swatch Watch on. The battery would run out, I would get a new one, and so I amassed a collection.

Fast forward to now, I always have my BlackBerry with me, and thus, no "need" for a watch.

Until now!

Always on the hunt for green/eco-friendly yet stylish accessories, I think that I have found my next watch!!

So one of my passions is style with a purpose. Knowing what is behind your purchase, where it was made, who made it, and what were their working conditions like.

That is why I am super excited to see this collaboration between one of my absolute favourite fashion designers, Vivienne Westwood, and the Ethical Fashion Africa Project!!

Handmade in Nairobi, all bags are created using recycled roadside advertisement banners and safari tents by marginalised communities of women such as single mothers, widows, HIV/AIDS victims and those living in extreme poverty.

The Ethical Fashion Programme is a project of the International Trade Centre that works in partnership with big distributors and high-end designers who source fashion and lifestyle products from marginalized communities of women and micro- producers in Africa.

Working directly with those living in the world's most challenging conditions, from urban slums to impoverished rural areas it aims to empower them in a sustainable manner through quality work that minimizes the negative impact on the environment.
Currently, the Ethical Fashion Programme supports the work of over 7000 women who live in conditions of extreme poverty, but who have a strong desire to improve their lives. Through orders from companies such as Vivienne Westwood, some of the poorest people in the world have access to a job and an income that subsequently benefits the entire community.

This is not charity, this is work. The bags will be produced in 3 designs - Get a Life (Banner), the Gaia Heart and the quilted Orb (Orb in two colour ways) and will be available in worldwide stores from February 2011.

I am super-excited to get my hands on one!!

Cape Love...

Remember when you were a kid, and ponchos were fun. An easy way to get an extra layer of warmth, without feeling restricted!!

Well, the adult and slightly more sophisticated version of the poncho, is the cape. Often very tailored, the cape is a way of making a unique statement.

One of my favourite capes that I have come across this season, is this stunning one, in Plum from Coach. However, for $698, I will just admire it from afar!

Brand New Bag!

So, I stood in crazy line ups on Boxing Day, thankful that all of those stores had amazing sales just for me on my Birthday!

I was in search of two things, new boots and a new bag. I searched high and low, to no avail. Then I came home and remembered, that for the last couple of years I have been in love with CHA CHA Handbags, made by Canadian Designer Lori Chalmers.

So I popped onto Lori's Blog, and there it was, waiting just for me!! Met all of my criteria, recycled leather, hand-made, and one-of-a-kind!!! Also, the studded bottom so reminds me of Alexander Wang's signature bag!!

Yay!! I can't wait for it to come in the mail!!! And I will do a follow up to show you what's in my new bag soon!

My Collection for Today...

I came across Lisa Congdon's Blog, via ETSY.

This is a blog documenting a project that will span exactly one year, from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2010. On each of those 365 days, I will photograph or draw (and occasionally paint) one collection. Most of the collections are real and exist in my home or studio; those I will photograph. Some are imagined; those I will draw or (occasionally) paint.

Since I was a young girl, I have been obsessed both with collecting and with arranging, organizing and displaying my collections. This is my attempt to document my collections, both the real and the imagined. Some of my collections are so large that I will need to photograph them separately over several days. I will likely not attempt to photograph collections in which the individual pieces are large in size or awkward in shape (i.e. my art collection or vintage enamel dishware collection). The only rule is that I must photograph or draw a whole or part of a collection each day for 365 days and post the result here on this blog.

The practice of collecting and documenting collections is as old as the hills. I want onlookers here to know that I do not profess to be doing anything new or unique or ingenious. I am embarking on this project because I love my collections, and I want to document them in a way that makes sense to me, and share them with whoever might be interested in looking at them.

So in scouring thrift shops for wool sweaters which we turn into our EDIT MITTENS, we often come across awesome vintage pieces.

I have been faithfully rescuing these from their lives of dust-collecting on lonely store shelves. The issue now is, that I have to commit to being a collector of one genre, and not many. So a while back I started an ETSY store called EDIT VINTAGE FINDS.

So the effects of Global Warming were evident when we woke up this morning to the city being covered in snow, and no power.

In search of breakfast and then lunch, we decided to take a drive out to Ft.McLeod (where they filmed Brokeback Mountain), which is about 40kms from our house.

Not only did we find a local bakery, for much needed breakfast bagels, but we also did a little thrifting as well!

I am so excited at the lovely new pieces of vintage fabrics that I found, which will be turned into some new Edit Spring Clutch Purses (photos to follow soon)!

I am the most excited however, about the vintage Polaroid Camera that I found (with film inside)!!

it. My favorite and first place I go to in thrift stores is the jewellery case, I like to think I am great at finding beauty in the obscure and random. I also LOVE making my own clothes, as clothing is the way I try to express myself. Also, I am a natural red head.

I recently came across a picture of Ginnifer Goodwin, in a stunning Dior Purple Floral Dress from the 2010 Spring/Summer Collection.

Today on a hunt, I found this amazing vintage floral dress! Very much the same breezy feel.

So I am finding that even though we live in a city, sometimes it feels more like a small town. That being said, I now assume that everyone I know, somehow knows everyone else that I know.

In that six degrees of separation, I met Lynol.

Lynol was introduced to me through Paul (who will be profiled in My Style in a couple of weeks), and I couldn't stop staring; amazing style. When Lynol came in for the shoot, it turns out that he knew Jaime (our photographer), and the story doesn't end there.

Mitten Hospital

Well it seems as though our mittens are highly popular with people and canines alike!

We have had 4 instances of dogs taking more than a liking to the mittens, and chewing them up!

I got a package in the mail on Monday with a lovely note form some ladies in Edmonton who had purchased a pair of our mittens from SABRINA BUTTERFLY.

Sadly their beloved pooch had taken a chunk out of the thumb of one of the mittens, and wondering if I could repair it.

My lovely assistant Jim went hunting through our (many) bins of remnants and much to my surprise, found the exact sweater that the damaged piece was originally cut from.

A little dissection and then re-construction and voila! The EDIT mitten has been re-Edited!

They were also gracious enough to send me some lovely vintage buttons, which I love, and am saving to make something special!

I am and have been in LOVE with Gravity's Pope's Calgary shoe store, ever since I walked through their doors a couple of years back.

Imagine how much harder I fell, when I clicked onto their site this morning and found this:

I knew instantly that I would have to take them up on that juicy offer, who could resist. I decided to balance my excitement with a dose of practicality! So, as the one that I love and I have a wedding to attend in a few months, we are in need of some lovely footwear for said occasion!

The other morning I found Liam (7) in the TV room watching CBC Newsworld. He was watching the coverage of the situation in Haiti, and was fully engrossed! After about 20 minutes, he got up and came back with his money jar. He had made the decision to donate all that was in it to Haiti. It came to $51.71 which he put in a little ziplock bag, and wrote "HAITI" on it with a marker.

I have to say that this is one of my proudest moments as a parent.

It has also inspired me to do something as well. We are going to release a Limited Edition "Circle of Love" mitten, with $5 from each pair being donated to SAVE THE CHILDREN.

We're hoping to add another $500 to Liam's $51.71, and you can help!

Grab a pair for yourself, or give them as a Valentine's Day gift to that special someone, and know that you're doing a small part to help!

The mittens will go on Sale this Friday, January 29th, and will be on our website and in our shop until they sell out!

My friend Arron was so go as to let me know that, the Softmoc stores across Canada have teamed up with
Soles 4 Souls to donate gently worn shoes to much needed recipients in Haiti.

I know it’s hard for everyone to donate money, but this is a really easy way to donate and help. Most of us have unworn pairs of shoes just collecting dust in our closets! Or, the shoes your kids may have outgrown. I found five pairs from Liam just from last year alone!

It’s really easy. All you need to do is bring in your old shoes to any Soft Moc store across Canada between January 15-22. They will donate the shoes to help the survivors in Haiti.

Hurry the 22nd is tomorrow!

I made it home to Toronto briefly at the beginning of December, my dear friends A & R picked me up from the Airport, and we headed straight for the One Of A Kind Show! Sadly the last time I was there was years ago, so I was excited to go back and see some old favourites and some new finds! As well, I visited with some very talented friends.

We had to stop by and visit our friend Monique, who makes the most stunning line of jewels called MOONROX. Here is lovely Monique at the Moonrox booth.

I also had the chance to stop by and chat with Mélissa Lafrenière, who is my absolute favourtie jewellery designer. All of Missy Industry jewellery is made by hand by Melissa in Montreal out of Sterling Silver. We carry Missy Industry at EDIT, and the pieces just fly out of the shop!

I am happy to announce that we will be introducing a new Canadian Designer to Edit as of June. Nancy Rosa of Toronto, designs a line called: MYMOMMADETHAT.

nancy rosa and her mother (the "mom" in my mommadethat) have been making dresses out of beautifully preserved, unused vintage fabrics for over a decade. After repeatedly answering the question "where did you get that dress?!" with the same wry answer, "oh... my mom made that"... well, mymommadethat was born.

mymommadethat dresses are consciously made of unused vintage fabrics + textiles lovingly found across this land of ours. And the fact that the dresses, (always manufactured locally) leave little to no environmental footprint on this earth of ours is a pretty big plus too.

TOMS shoes' new wrap boot is now available online!

I checked these a few months back in Design Lines Toronto!

Five colors are now available in the cotton canvas boot inspired by the tradition of Argentine polo and brightly colors leg wraps of its champion horses.

And in TOMS shoes tradition each boot sold a pair of shoes will be donated to a child in need.

I'm thinking of bringing these into the shoppe!

Some years ago, I worked for my friend Sam in his lovely boutique BODY BLUE in Toronto. It was there that I learned how to deliver good customer service and also developed a slight shopping addiction. One of the brands that was carried was Itsus out of Montreal.

I remember them to have great fitting t-shirts in eye-catching prints.

I am happy to discover, that Itsus has re-branded, and is presenting an entirely green collection for Summer 2009!

The commitment to developing the “SYSTEM GREEN” production model came from the recognition that certain traditional textile manufacturing methods have an extremely negative impact on our global environment.

Much research has gone into the study of traditionally grown cotton vs organically grown cotton…and once understood the choice was clear. However, the raw material is only the first stage of the production process. The industrial dyeing and finishing of fabrics also offers options that are more eco-friendly.

Thanks to the efforts of ‘Global Organic Textile Standard’ (GOTS), choices now exist at each and every stage of the manufacturing cycle that improves our environment.
"SYSTEM GREEN" also has a strong social compliance mandate which improves the working conditions along with the health and well being of the people who contribute their talents to the creation of the Itsus Eco products.
